Simple Facts About Dwarf Russian Hamsters

Dwarf Russian hamsters are an incredible kind of pet that you can purchase at your local store.  There are some basic things and tips that you should know about these amazing creatures that are important if you want to own one of them someday.  The dwarf Russian hamster family actually consists of three main types of pets.  These pets are called the winter white, Campbell’s, and the Roborovski.  Each one is unique in their own way and you will learn how they differ from each other but yet are similar in many ways as well.

Winter White

If you were to search in a pet store you would rarely find the winter whites because this species is the rarest of them all.  They have a very dark colored coat that is usually grayish and they have an undercoat that is mostly white.  They also carry a dark stripe across their back which is one of the ways you can tell from other types of species.  These dwarf Russian hamsters have an amazing ability to change their fur to completely white to match their snowy surroundings.  Since they are food to many predators they needed to have a defense mechanism to evade these creatures.  This is why they are called winter white dwarf hamsters.

Campbell

This dwarf hamster is the one that you will most often see in pet stores and is the most popular out of all the others.  They are native to areas of Mongolia and are most often referred to as Dzungarian dwarf hamsters because of their inhabitance in Dzungaria.  As with other animals kept as pets the dwarf Russian hamsters are no different and can be found with many color variations along with cross breeding many types.  The normal color that you find them in the wild is most likely to be grayish brown.  Now it is much harder to find these pets in their natural color because of the selective breeding that has taken place.  They all do have a dark dorsal stripe on their backs that tells you they are part of the dwarf Russian family.

Roborovski

The last types of dwarf Russian hamsters that we will discuss are Roborovski or also called “robos”.  These creatures are very unique because unlike the others they are incredibly smaller and have much longer legs.  These longer legs lead them to be much faster than their cousins and make them more energetic and active at the same time.  If you want to care for them then you have your work cut out for you taking care of them.  Another interesting feature of these pets is they are omnivores in the wild.  They actually have a taste for meat as well as fruits and vegetables.  They also have different fur because they are found in the desert where there is much sand and they have the same color fur coat for camouflage purposes.

Dwarf Russian hamsters are very unique and amazingly easy to care for just by having the right facts and information.  This is just some basic information you should know about these unusual pets.
